Class participation

Online learning may not be your favorite way of participating in a class, but this is necessary for you to understand the industry, and to give you an opportunity to take the reins of what you want to learn – rather than all of it being pushed at you.

I clearly stated the grading system in the syllabus, but will detail what happens when you are not completing your assignments.

A well thought out response to the selected article with meaningful interpretation of what you think and feel about it and posted by Saturday at noon, is worth 40pts.

Each day not posted: -3pts

Any brief (less than 250 words) and no real response to the paper other than that you read it, points are deducted as viewed by the instructor (we could try class assessments of each response if you guys are willing – that could be very interesting. We could also try self-assement – you decide the grade you think you accomplished – even more intriguing!)

If you use and properly cite two additional references in your response: 20pts.

If you comment to one person: 20pts; comment to two persons: 40pts.

That is a total of 100pts each week.

I am somewhat shocked and greatly disappointed in the responses to the first weeks assignments. This is the most senior of classes in our program at the moment, and several of you guys are simply not doing the work. I must reiterate that just because the class is online, does not mean that you don ‘t have to participate. Your participating represents your “class time” and if you don’t participate you will not pass the course. A poor beginning for some of you.

My main concern is that those of you not participating or staying with the schedule, affect everyone elses grade – since comment to at least two other responses is required, and many of you did not come close to the Saturday noon agreement.

I am emailing week 1 grades to each individual. If I missed anything please let me know. There is no makeup in this type of class given the necessity of collaborative comments. Week 1 closes as of Wednesdays at 12:00 noon, our physical class time.

Also notice that a top quality final project would not give you a passing grade without participation. If you do not participate for 3 weeks you will be dropped from the class.
